James Claude East passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Oct. 5, 2013, at the age of 89. Mr. East was born Aug. 4, 1924, and was a native of Tarrant City, Ala.

After an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, he attended Massey Business College, the University of Alabama and Florida International University to further his career as a certified public accountant. Mr. East worked with the U.S. Treasury Department until his retirement in 1974. Mr. East enjoyed farming, golf, writing poetry, traveling and winning Scrabble games in his retirement years. Mr. East was an active member of First Baptist Church, Niceville, Fla.

He is preceded in death by his four siblings; his son, James Marvin East; and his first wife, Lois Virginia East. He is survived by his wife, Martha Ballard East; his daughters: Carol Ingram, Betty Coshatt, and Sandra Hand; step-children: Dave Ballard, Perry Ballard, and Janet Hall; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Heritage Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Niceville at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, with interment to follow in Beal Memorial Cemetery.
