On October 25, 1944, he was united in marriage to Carole Dagen at the bride's home near Karlstad. He reported for duty in the U.S. Navy in November, 1944, and served in Bremerton, Washington, until honorably discharged in January, 1946.
Following his military service, Garner and Carole purchased a farm in Springbrook Township where they would raise their family and live to the present. Besides farming, Garner worked in home construction with Donald Rice, Arthur Ingebrigtsen, Tom Britten and Keith Britten. He also worked in commercial construction with The Witcher Construction Company.
Garner was a member of First Lutheran Church of Karlstad, served as a township supervisor for 22 years, and was a member of the American Legion Post #445 in Karlstad for 23 years.
Garner loved the land and caring for the farm. His wife and family were always a priority. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. With patience, he taught each of his grandchildren to drive the "little B" tractor. He was an avid reader and a wonderful storyteller.
Garner is survived by his wife, Carole; four daughters, Connie Nordin (James Jarshaw), Karlstad, MN; Lynnda (John) McNelly, Jackson, MN; Garnette (Dennis) Hanson, Newfolden, MN; Diedre (Jan) Nordin, Thief River Falls, MN; and one son, Jaeden (Lorie) Pederson, West Fargo, ND; 14 grandchildren, Eric (Martha) Nordin; Jed (Melanie) Nordin; Thomas (Betsy) Nordin; Renee (Tom) Andresen; Rachel (Mike) Ingebretson; Randy (Michelle) Hanson; Alan (Michelle) Hanson; Ryan (Holly) Stephenson; Chris (Andrea) Stephenson; Andriana Hanson; Britta Hanson; Kate (Cory) Anderson; Adam (Wendy) Nordin; Bailey Nordin; 12 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Karlee, Keaton, Blaine, Haley, Kinley, Alec, Brady, Mari, Jayley, Michaela, and Brody; one sister, Adeline Ingebrigtsen, Edmonds, WA; brother-in-law, WallaceOlson, White Bear Lake, MN; sister-in-law, Dorothy Pederson Miller, Humboldt, MN; as well asnumerous nieces and nephews.
Garner was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harvey Pederson; and sister, Lucille (Pederson) Olson.
