Wanda was born to Isaac Luther Caughron & Levonia McMillan who moved to High Point, Guilford County, North Carolina from Cocke County, Tennessee and raised their family there. She was the youngest daughter and next to last born of her parents 11 children. One brother, Claude, died in infancy. This left 5 boys and 5 girls.

The children in order of birth were William "Otey", Phillip Wesley "Willard", Ruby Reitzel, Nellie Matilda, Claude Haskel, Sarah "Allene", Mary "Juanita", Everett Luther, Jack Linville, Wanda Marie and Robert "Bobby" Thomas Walter Caughron.

Wanda had 1 son, Andy born in 1959. She had previously been married to David Hammond and remarried to Wayne Long in March, 1967 in Headland, Alabama at the home of her oldest sister, Ruby.
