ROGERS (KFSM), Friday, April 10, 2015 – A local nonprofit organization is remembering a six-year-old boy who prosecutors say was raped and killed by his parents.

Maurice Isaiah Torres’ biological parents, Mauricio Alejandro Torres, 45, and Cathy Lynn Torres, 43, were arrested Monday April 6 and are facing charges of capital murder, rape and first-degree battery in connection to his death, according to Benton County Prosecutor Nathan Smith.

Isaiah was a regular volunteer at the Samaritan Community Center in Rogers for three years.

“His favorite thing to do was to break down the boxes,” said Debbie Rambo, executive director. “So, he’d get a box of granola bars and empty them and then smash the boxes for recycling.”

Rambo said Isaiah came to the center each Tuesday night with his two sisters and helped put together snack packs.

“They took their job very seriously,” she said. “In fact, if an adult went over and tried to assist them or interfere in some way they would get very upset, because that was their job.”

Rambo said Isaiah was a fun-loving boy who loved to help out. She said it was because he took his job so seriously that he go an award for his hard work.

“We’re just praying that we can kind of come to some sort of closure at some point when it’s appropriate to and be able to honor him in some way,” she said. “We’re just grieving like a normal family would and hopefully with time those wounds will start to heal over.”

On Tuesday April 7, Benton County Circuit Judge Brad Karren ordered Cathy and Mauricio Torres be held without bond at the Benton County Detention Center, upholding the no-bail request made by Smith.

The couple is scheduled to appear in court on May 18.

Father, 50, who was convicted of raping his son, 6, to death with a stick is attacked by his stepson, 24, during sentencing hearing - forcing judge to declare a mistrial.

Arkansas judge on Thursday declared mistrial in capital murder case of Mauricio Torres, 50, convicted of raping to death his six-year-old son with a stick. Mistrial ruling came after Torres' stepson Quinton Martin, 24, charged at him in courtroom after being asked about sexual abuse
Torres' defense lawyer told the judge jurors could not unsee the 'violent attack'. Prosecutor proposed having Martin testify again and instructing jurors to disregard his earlier outburst
Judge sided with defense, citing the 'look of shock on jurors' faces'. Prosecutors will get a chance to appear before the judge in two weeks and make a case for upholding Torres' conviction.
