PERRY--Darwin Leo Young passed away peacefully on September 10, 1999, at the age of 71.

Darwin was born June 25, 1928, in Perry to Leo Thomas and Ruth Berchtold Young. He graduated from Box Elder High School in 1946. While in high school, Darwin served as President of the Boys League and was very active in athletics. He was a member of the 1946 State Champion team for Box Elder and was selected as an all-state guard.Darwin also played football at Utah State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Intramural Sports and a Masters in Psychology. He was involved in the ROTC program, which eventually led him to service in the Korean War. He was also a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

On October 20, 1950, Darwin married the love of his life, Helen Mae Ridd. They lived in Brigham City where they raised their children and participated in community and church activities. He cherished the time he was able to spend with her and and waited patiently to be with her again after she passed away September 6, 1986.

Darwin taught elementary school in Corinne and was later employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Intermountain School in Brigham City. He began at Intermountain in the Physical Education Department and in 1985 he retired as Head of the Guidance Department. Darwin spoke highly of the people he worked with and enjoyed their friendship after his retirement.

Darwin was also retired as a full Colonel from the Army Reserve.

As a member of the LDS church, he served willingly as Sunday School President, Ward Clerk and many other callings. He enjoyed attending church and was grateful for the care he received from others.

He was very supportive of his family. In addition to attending activities and events with them, Darwin enjoyed fishing with his buddies and golfing with the Men's Association at Eagle Mountain. He is a past President of the Brigham City Golf and Country Club. He was also a great care giver to his pets who adored him and will continue to look for him.

Darwin was very appreciative for the love and friendship of those who were near him and always enjoyed the company of those he came in contact with.

Darwin leaves behind four children and two sons-in-law, Nancy Young of Salt Lake City, Susan and Val Thurston of Pleasant Grove, Linda and Brad Fellows of Sandy, Michael D. Young of Perry, and four grandchildren, Jennifer Thurston, Nicole, Brandon and Rachel Fellows. Also surviving are Helen's brother, Jay D. Ridd of Salt Lake City; Darwin's two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lyle and Barbara Young, Pete and Kathy Young; and his sister, Ruthie Christoffersen, all of Brigham City.

Services for Darwin will be held Tuesday, September 14, 11:30, at the Stake Center in Perry. Family and friends may call Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at Peterson Funeral Home in Brigham City and Tuesday morning from 10 to 11:15 at the Stake Center. Darwin will be laid to rest in the Brigham City Cemetery.

According to his obituary his retired as a full Colonel from the Army Reserve.
