Maria was the daughter of Orestes "Henry" Burrows and Fannie Payne. Her mother, Fannie, died in 1856 when Mariah still a toddler. Her father, Henry, fought in the War Between the States.

Mariah married Richard Tate "Dick" Forbes on 08 Aug 1870 in Jersey County, Illinois. He was a Civil War vet and native of Scotland. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 23 Sep 1874.

Mariah and Dick were the parents of 10 children, including a set of fraternal twins. 3 of the Forbes children died young. Jacob was born on 23 Aug 1881, but died on14 Oct 1882 at the age of 13 months. Charles died of appendicitis in 1895 at the age of 22; and Richard Ray, twin of Leona, died in Grafton of epilepsy in 1899.

Dick worked as a rigger and a stationary engineer in a quarry in Jersey County from 1869 to 1900. After that, he made his living as a shoemaker.

Dick passed away in 1912.

Mariah lived until 1940. She suffered a fractured neck and right femur when she fell to the floor. She died at the home of her daughter, Mable, at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 10 days. Mariah had been visiting there for the final 2 months of her life.

She was survived by 4 sons, Enoch Forbes of St. Louis, Fred Forbes, William Forbes and Louis Leslie Forbes of Grafton; 2 daughters, Leona Cowles of Kellogg, Idaho, and Mable Hole of Normandy, Missouri; and 16 grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and 3 sons, Mariah was preceded in death by her parents; 1 daughter, Nellie; and a grandson, Billy Forbes.

Mariah's body was transported from St. Louis County to the home of a niece, Mrs. Edward Rayborn. Funeral services were conducted on the afternoon of 22 Jun 1940 at the Methodist church in Grafton.

Mariah was buried in an unmarked grave.
