Kosciusko County Recorded Its First Traffic Fatality Of 1959 When David L. Lowman, 28, Of Route 1, Warsaw, Was Killed This Morning In A Single Car Smash Up On East Center Street.

Lowman, married and the father of a four year-old son, was pronounced dead on arrival at Murphy Medical Center minutes after the accident occurred at 6:10 a.m.

The car he was driving (an old funeral coach) struck an outside telephone booth in front of the Polk Oil company station, just west of the Argonne Road intersection with U.S. 30 The vehicle demolished the phone booth, then traveled a measured 576 feet west before smashing into a tree in the 2200 block of East Center Street.

Dr. William Cron, deputy county coroner said he was investigating the possibility that Lowman was experiencing physical difficulty when the accident occurred.

It was also very foggy at the time.

Ex-Football Star

Lowman was enroute to work at the Zimmer Mfg. company, where he had been employed since June, 1951. He was a star end on the Warsaw High School football teams in 1948 and 1949.

City Officers Donald Snyder, Eugene Brown and Paul Snyder investigated the accident. They said the auto jumped the curb in front of the Polk Oil company station, just east of Parker Street and crashed into the phone booth, tearing it to shreds and carrying the wreckage some 66 feet.

The auto then continued wildly along the sidewalk in front of Hoosier International Motors, dropped off the curb and veered across the street, finally coming to rest after smashing into the tree.

Lowman suffered a broken neck and other injuries.
