McNulty Berger, Mary Jean

Mary Jean was born on January 4, 1928, daughter of the late Robert and Bernice (Scutt) Jewell. She died peacefully on January 13, 2015 at the age of 87. She was the sixth of ten children and was raised on the family farm south of Gillett (a city that was named after one of her ancestors) on the Oconto River. After doing morning farm chores, Mary Jean would walk about a half mile down the road to the one room country school for elementary school. Her high school years required a trek of three miles into town along the railroad tracks. She graduated from Gillett High School in 1946.

Mary Jean met Etherel "Mac" E. McNulty on a blind date the summer after high school. He put a lightening bug on her finger and told her that it was a diamond ring. She never did get a real diamond! She was then known as Jean, as Etherel said he already had a sister named Mary. They married on August 30, 1947 and had six children: Ruth, Nancy, Darlene "Dolly", William "Bill", Betty and Robert "Bob". The family settled in Two Rivers in 1958 when Etherel was assigned to Manitowoc County as a Wisconsin State Patrolman. Jean was mostly a stay-at-home Mom, but also took care of neighborhood children in their pre-school years. When Jean's children were all in school full-time, she began working at Paragon Electric until arthritis in her hands prevented her from doing that. Mac died on August 17, 1981. On September 21, 1985 Jean married Victor Berger. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2002. Jean moved to Wisteria Haus, an assisted living facility in Two Rivers, in January 2012, where she resided until her death.

Jean is survived by five children: Ruth Holly, Nancy (Don) Daleiden, Dolly McNulty, Bill McNulty and Betty Amuzu (fiancé, Bruce Suettinger); daughter-in-law: Viola McNulty; ten grandchildren: Heather (Tim) Holly Pinnow, Stephanie (Barry) Davis, Rob (Brenna) Holly, Michael (Andrea) Holly, JayCee McNulty, Ekwe Amuzu, Teiko Amuzu, Mensah Amuzu, Matthew McNulty and Megan Stiefvater; six great grandchildren: Baxter and Maisy Davis, Spencer Holly, Otto, August, and Etta Pinnow; step children and step grandchildren. She is further survived by two brothers: George and Robert, Jr. and four sisters: Alice Hansen, Lois Reimer, Cora Rotter Boerst, and Bernice Paulson; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, numerous brothers-in-law and

sisters-in-law, two husbands and her son, Bob McNulty.

Jean was known as a warm, caring person with a playful side. She enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities, camping and paddling with her family into her 80's.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Grace Congregational UCC, 2801 Garfield Street, Two Rivers. Officiating at the service will be Rev. Kim Henning. Burial will be at Forest View Cemetery in Two Rivers at a later date.
