Edward James Durrschmidt, Jr.

GALVESTON — Edward James Durrschmidt, Jr., 78, passed peacefully on Sunday, July 3, 2005, at the Edgewater Special Care Unit in Galveston, Texas. Ed was born in Derby, Connecticut on June 5, 1927, and was a WWII veteran.

He was married to Dorothy Smith, his beloved bride, of 53 years. Ed and Dotti were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yonkers, New York. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Phi Kappa Fraternity and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1954 from Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana. They moved to Galveston after Ed retired from Brown & Root in 1995, where he was a civil engineer. Ed was passionate about his bridges. His work can be seen as far away as Africa, Connecticut, Michigan and here in Texas.

Ed leaves behind his wife, Dotti; children Edward James Durrschmidt, III and wife Pam of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan; James Durrschmidt and wife Doreen of Clear Lake, Texas; Barry Durrschmidt and wife Danna of Flower Mound, Texas; Dottie Anne Durrschmidt of Phoenix, Arizona; Laura and husband Leo Calhan of Burlington, Vermont; and Lisa and husband John Dyring of Spring, Texas. The grandchildren he leaves behind are Philip and Tracy Durrschmidt; Deidre and Samantha Durrschmidt; and John Douglas Dyring. Including numerous other family members and friends.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to all of the staff in the Special Care Unit at Edgewater for their constant, loving care. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church at 1804 69th St. in Galveston. Ed’s body has been donated to the Baylor College of Medicine Willed Body Program. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer‚s Association at (800) 272-3900 or by visiting www.alz.org/Donate/ .
