Leota Rose (Payton) Fruit, 71, of De Soto, KS passed April 11, 2015 at her home with heart problems. Funeral services will be held April 17, 2015 at 2:00PM with visitation from 1-2:00PM at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel 32665 Lexington Ave., De Soto, KS.
Leota was born November 19, 1943 in Chula, MO. She was raised in De Soto and raised her children there. Leota worked for S.R.S. in Olathe until retirement. Then worked for the De Soto School Dist. as a bus aide, which she enjoyed. She loved genealogy and keeping up with the cemeteries in our area. Leota also loved her flower garden.
Preceded in death by: parents George and Elfreeda Payton; sister Georgene Paxton, and baby brother Jesse Payton. Survivors include: husband Ronald Fruit of the home; daughters Martina Park of De Soto, KS and Alicia ( T.J.) McCleary of Mountian Grove, MO; son Justin Large of Ottawa, KS; sisters Audrey Quaile and Loretta Nichols; brother Carl Payton; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Leota Rose Payton, daughter of George Hampton Payton and Elfreeda June Farr, was born Nov. 19, 1943, at her grandparent's home near Chula, Livingston County, Missouri. Raised in Chillicothe, Utica, and Cameron, Missouri, and moved to DeSoto, Kansas in 1960. She was married on May 13, 1961, in Olathe, Kansas to Merle LeRoy (Guy) Large, who was born Feb. 6, 1944, in Lenape, Kansas. Children: (1) Martina Louise Large, married to John Michael Park, who died of cancer in 1997. children, Lindsey Grace Park, and David Michael Park, live in Olathe, KS. (2) Alicia Diane Large, married in 1995, to James Briggs, and has one son William Hampton Robert Briggs. (3) Justin Payton Large, married in 2001, Las Vegas, Nevada, to Katherine. No children. He has one child, Erica Berry B. by a former girlfriend. Leota and Guy were divorced in 1976, and Leota was married on Jan 26, 1977, at the Baptist Church in DeSoto, Kansas to Merlin Harold (Bill) Ridgway Jr., son of Bill Sr., and Laura (Willis). No children were born of this marriage and we had 18 happy years of marriage until he died at age 50 of cancer. Leota married on July 7, 1999, Miami, Oklahoma to Ronald Everett Fruit, son of Randall and Lenora (McGonagal) Fruit of Antioch, Miami Co., KS. Leota has worked for the SRS office since Jan 18, 1976.
