According to his death certificate, Frederic Abel was the son of Fritz Abel. He arrived in the United States (port of New York) at the age of 24 onboard the ship Oneida on 6 March 1849. His destination was Ohio.

Frederic Able was a musician and eventually settled in Detroit. There he was the "Musical Director" of the Concordia Singing Society, which "was founded in 1865, by twelve German-American Civil War veterans who were members of a singing group at Detroit’s Social Athletic Club."

He also taught music. As early as 1850, he appears in the U.S. Census for Norwalk, Ohio, listed as "music teacher. In the 1860 census, he appears in Cleveland, Ohio, again listed as "music teacher." In the 1900 census, he appears in Detroit where he is listed as "musician, professor."

According to his 1876 U.S. Passport application, he was a naturalized citizen. He was 5 ft. 3 1/2 in. with a high forehead and brown eyes. His face is recorded as oval and he had black hair and a "dark" complexion.

Frederick Abel was also a veteran of the Civil War. Following is his record of service:
