ALEX HERMANN

Man Loses Life as Chair Burns
Alex Hermann Death Blamed on Cigarette
MANITOWOC—Alex Hermann, 74, of 1222 South 14th St., Manitowoc, retired tavern operator, was cremated in a fire that presumably started from a cigarette spark as he sat in a chair in the living room of his home late Thursday afternoon.
Fire Chief Reuben Wetenkamp said when his men reached the home in response to a phone call they found Hermann a virtual human torch with the chair and a nearby bed in flames.
Hermann’s wife, Rose, told the chief she had given her husband a cigarette a short time before, waited until he smoked it and then presumably put it out in an ash tray before going outside. Her husband has been a semi-invalid in recent years.
Neighbors noticed smoke coming from the windows of the living room and rushed over. One neighbor sought to enter the home with a garden hose but was driven back by the flames. A booster line from one of the fire trucks quickly extinguished the chair, bed and rugs.
Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, was summoned and announced there would be no inquest.

Funeral services for Hermann will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, and at 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Chuch. The Rev. Donald Rose will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

He was born in Manitowoc Nov. 3, 1879, and in 1921 married Miss Rose Daron. For many years he operated a tavern at South Tenth and Franklin Streets, retiring five years ago.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Forrest Danforth of Manitowoc and Mrs. Donald Graycarek of Milwaukee; five grandchildren, four nieces and a nephew.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. where the Rosary will be recited at 7 pm. Friday
