Anthony W. Hartman

Anthony W. Hartman, age 79, of Manitowoc, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Rev. Camillus Janas, OFM, will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum.

Tony was born on Jan. 17, 1923 in the town of Newton, the son of the late John and Anna Holschbach Hartman. He grew up and worked on the family farm and always had a love of the land in his soul.

Tony proudly served on a US Navy minesweeper in the Pacific during World War II from 1943-1946 and was honorably discharged. Later he joined the Navy Seabees and then the Air National Guard. He was pleased to be able to pass on his knowledge and experience of construction machinery to many in these services. He was a member of Amvets Post 99 and The Retired Enlisted Association.

Tony married the former Lillian Sand o Rosholt, South Dakota on Jan. 17, 1948 at St. Andrew’s. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998.

Tony was a member of St. Andrew’s parish and had strong faith in God. His faith and religious devotion were very important to him. He lived a life of caring and generosity for others. Tony loved his family more than anything. He also loved to travel. One of his favorite things to do was to head up to northern Wisconsin. His last trip was to Montana to welcome his first great grandchild, Io. He was always very happy to be around children and they were also drawn to his open mind, loving character and endless patience.

He was employed as an operating engineer, driving heavy equipment on many construction projects around the area. Tony was a member of the Intl. Union of Operating Engineers Local 139 for more than 150 years.

After retirement Tony donated many hours driving people to appointments for the American Red Cross and Human Services. He also delivered Meals on Wheels. He will be remembered by many for his willingness to help others in their time of need.

Tony was a world-class gardener. He liked to get the soil between his fingers and was always trying new varieties of vegetables and new ways of planting, tilling and composting. His children called on him often for gardening advice and help. It was important to Tony to have a well-kept yard and garden. He loved to tinker and could fix or build just about anything. Lillian would see a yard ornament she liked and Tony would figure it out on the jigsaw or the welder and recreate something even more interesting. He was always generous with his time. He also loved to read and gather information to learn more about history, the out-of-doors, and how to do things for his next project. He passed that great desire of learning on to his children and grandchildren.

Those who carry on his legacy include his wife Lillian; children Lyle and life partner Kathy Geiger of Larrabee; Kathy and David Hughes of Loveland, Colo; Steven and Kerri Hartman of Helena, Montana; Marcia Therriault of Firth, Neb.; and Debbie and Steve Couture of Chazy, New York; grandchildren Shane, Brett, Jonathan, Sarah Dawn, Nicholas, Brian, Stacy, Megan, Chad, Adrianna, Nathan and great-grandchild, Io. He is survived by three brothers, Francis of Manitowoc; Leo (Marion) of Newton and Norbert (Betty) of Woodbridge, Virginia; sisters-in-law Grace Hartman, Hermie Hartman, Loretta Kreppner, Dolores Duree and Sister Mary Sand as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Alois, Clarence and John.

Family and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home at 628 Water St. on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 10:30 a.m. A prayer service will be held on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. led by Fr. Cam.
