Born in Barcaldine, Queensland, Australia in 1898. David settled in Sydney with his family in the early 1900's. He was a labourer when like many of his mates, David signed up for the great war but was under age. He enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces at Randwick, Sydney on 20th nov, 1915. David was assigned to the 17th Btn, AIF, 5541,15th reinforcements & on the 9.9.16, embarked on the HMAT Euripides for Plymouth, England, arriving on the 26.10.1916. Proceeding to France on the Golden Eagle, 13.12.16. They arrived at Etaples in france. By mid 1917 they had fought thru to the western front. On the 3.5.1917 in the 2nd battle of bullecourt David was wounded in action and subsequently died of wounds on the 8th May, 1917. He is buried at Grevillers British Cemetery (plot IV, Row D, Grave # 8.) near Bapaume France. David is the son of John Thomas Byrne (1870-16.7.1934) & Frances Ann Byrne, nee Regan (23.8.1869-18.6.1926) of Alexandria, New South Wales.
