Gordon M. Karstaedt, age 86, of Rural Manitowoc, died on Monday evening, April 13, 2015 at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Gordon was born on March 14, 1929, in the Town of Newton. He was the son of the late Edward and Lydia (Heckman) Karstaedt. Gordon attended Elm Grove school. He served his county in the United States Army. After basic training at Fort Leonardwood in 1954, he did a tour of duty in a division of the Air Force in Alaska until 1956. He then spent 6 years in the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1962. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 387, Franklin, WI.

On December 10, 1971 he married Leone (Nee O'Hearn) Steffen, residing in the Town of Newton until 1997 when they moved to Manitowoc. They were together 43 years. Gordon belonged to St. James United Church of Christ, Newton, all his life. He farmed in the Town of Newton with his brother Howard, later owning his own trucking business hauling cattle to Milwaukee. Gordon worked for Service Motor Company from 1978 to 1991 as a salesman in Fond du Lac and Dale; later retiring and working part-time at Schutte Manufacturing Co. and for Grotegut Farms.

Gordon enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed time at their cabin on Winslow Lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dominoes, and reading books. Gordon was very proud of his children and was an avid woodworker in which he loved cutting down trees and making crafts. He enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers and playing checker with his grandson, Eric.

Survivors include his wife: Leone; one step-son: Paul (Cheryl) Steffen, Canton, GA; four step-daughters: Theresa (David) Haupt, Rural Manitowoc; Julie DelleMonache (and fiancé Rick LaPean), Manitowoc, Lois (Ed) Slany, Marshfield, and Kathy (Kurt) Eastling, Appleton; seven grandchildren: Eric Haupt, Rural Manitowoc; Melissa (Adam) Bubolz, Collins, Katie Haupt, Rural Manitowoc, Rocco DelleMonache, Orlando, FL, Daniel Rutherford, Green Bay, Kimberly Rutherford, Green Bay, and Andrew Slany, Marshfield; one great grandchild: Alyssa Bubolz, Collins; three sisters: Jeanette Thornam, Denver, CO; Doris (Wilmer) Schueler, Cleveland, and Delores Scheidt, Kiel; one step-sister: Vivian Szczepkowski, Sheboygan; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Thomas (Mary) O'Hearn, Appleton; Melvin (Margaret) O'Hearn, Appleton, and Joann (Martin) Tadisch, Kewaunee. Nieces, nephews, cousins and many good friends also survive.

Gordon was also preceded in death by his step-mother: Erma Karstaedt; two brothers: Howard (Olive) Karstaedt and Orville (LaVern) Karstaedt; one sister: Grace (LeRoy) Olm; two brothers-in-law: Harold Thornam and Adrian Scheidt; and one step-brother-in-law: Richard Szczepkowski.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at St. James United Church of Christ, 13312 Pioneer Road, Newton (Spring Valley). Officiating at the service will be the Rev. William Kesting with burial to follow at the church cemetery, where graveside military rites will be accorded by Franklin American Legion Post 387.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, April 17, 2015 at St. James United Church of Christ from 4:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The visitation will continue on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the church from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Gordon's name.

And also a special thank you to Jerry, Gordy's buddy, who spent time with him watching the news, the Packers, the Brewers and later always checking in on him. Lastly a special thank you to all the hospice staff and especially his CNAs: Tammy, Debbie and Carol, for all their care and compassion.
