When John Kane born in county Antrim, Ireland, came to America, in 1752, he was accompanied by an intimate friend, Charles Cullen, of county Ulster. They entered into business, acquired valuable landed possessions in Dutchess County and prospered.
They married sisters, daughters of the Rev. Elisha and Abigail (Moss) Kent. John Kane married Sybil Kent in 1756, but Lucy Kent, the younger of four daughters, was not married to Charles Cullen until 1768. The only know Cullen children were, Charles, d. bef. 1798, John, d. 1819, Martha, d. 1792, & Susan, who lived a long life.
Charles Cullen lost heavily by the war, but not sharing his brother-in-law, John Kane’s loyalist sentiments, he escaped the fate of attainder and exile. He remained undisturbed and lived on his means, until the end of the war. His resources were then much exhausted, and he removed to a farm he owned at Carmel, in the new county of Putnam. He died there in 1787. Mrs. Lucy Cullen died on the farm near Carmel in 1798 at the age of 53. Where they were buried is unknown, but probably it was in the old Gilead burying ground, which is on a lot of the farm where they lived.
After the death of Lucy Kent Cullen, her 12 year old daughter Susan went to live with Lucy's sister, Sybil Kent Kane, who died in 1806. Afterward, Susan went to Utica, NY, to live with her aunt's daughter, Sybilla Adeline Kane, wife of Jeremiah Van Rensselaer. It was here Susan Cullen met and married James Van Rensselaer, who was the brother of Jeremiah Van Rensselaer.
