Martha Jane was the daughter of Joseph Beets, Sr. She was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee.
She was married first to Amos Lenager in Lykins (now Miami Co.) Kansas on 30 December 1858. They had two children Jane A. Lenager and Mary E. Lenager. Amos
Lenager fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War and died in service at Camp Rogers, Mississippi on January 18, 1863. She married second Hugh McCandless on September 9, 1866 in Miami County, Kansas. They had 4 children, Laura, Charles, Hugh and Joseph.
