Merle David Long enjoyed always “being there” for his family and community. He approached life with a positive attitude, taking one day at a time and making the most of it. At the age of 71, Merle passed away in the loving care of his family Sunday, November 2, 2014. A memorial fund has been established in Merle’s memory for University of Iowa Research for Central Nervous System Lymphoma. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will be in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2014 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna.

Merle was born June 1, 1943 in Savanna, the son of Charles David and Betty Jean (Beddingfield) Long. He is a Savanna High School graduate with the Class of 1961. Merle served in the US Air Force from 1962 to 1966. On December 26, 1967, Merle married Wanda Kay Wells in Thomson. He became an Electrician in 1967 with IBEW # 145, Rock Island – Moline. Merle retired in 2000 after thirty-three years.

Merle loved spending family time together, watching the grandkids events, walking, riding his bike, old country music, and muscle cars. He enjoyed community service, cutting wood, building fires, telling stories and being outside. He liked playing cards, Soduko and completing Crypto-quotes.

Merle was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he served on the Cemetery Committee; a past member of the Savanna City Council for twenty-two years; Savanna Township Trustee; Carroll County Housing Authority; American Legion; Chairman of Savanna Train Car Museum; one of the founders of the Haunted Forest; and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #145.

Merle will be dearly missed by his wife, Wanda Long, of Savanna; three sons, Mark (Kristie) Long of Savanna, Steven Long of Savanna and Michael (Britney) Long of Thomson; three grandchildren, Jordyn, Sydney and Zion; one great grandson, Drake; three step grandchildren, Halley, Kalley and Kellsey; one step great-grandson, Shaydyn; and a sister, Jerrie Letcher of Thomson. Merle is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Carole Klein and Lela Meinsma.
