DANIEL MOREAU BARRINGER, JR.

GEOLOGIST, ATTORNEY, CONSERVATIONIST
Died Philadelphia, PA where he was practicing law.
Buried Green Mount Cemetery 3 December 1929

Daniel, a geologist, is best known as the first person to prove the existence of an impact crater on the Earth, the well known Coon Mtn. Crater west of Flagstaff, Arizona. The site was renamed the Barringer Crater in his honor.

Daniel Moreau Barringer, Jr. the son of Daniel Moreau Barringer and Margaret Daisy Bennett Barringer graduated from Princeton University in 1879 at the age of 19, and in 1882 graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Law. He later studied geology and mineralogy at Harvard University and at the University of Virginia.

In 1902 Barringer learned of the existence of this very large (1.5 km in diameter) crater which is located 35 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona. This crater was known as the Coon Mountain Crater had previously been studied by other geologist as early as 1891. Other geologists believed that the crater had been formed as the result of either a natural gas explosion or by a meteorite.

When Daniel learned about the existence of this crater and the presence of iron he became convinced that the crater was caused by a meteor. By the time of his death in Philadelphia in 1929, Daniel had convinced most all of the scientists and other geologists that he was correct. Daniel's theory was been further confirmed in the 1960's with the finding of further evidence. Daniel's theory and findings were so important that a small crater on the back side of the Moon was named the "Barringer Crater".

Daniel wrote many geology articles and wrote two books, "A Description of Minerals of Commercial Value" in 1893 and also "The Laws of Mines and Mining in the United States".

He was active in helping to securing the nomination of his good friend and former Princeton classmate, Woodrow Wilson, for the presidency in 1912.

Daniel loved hunting and was a staunch conservationist. He with his close good friends Theodore Roosevelt and Owen Wister were founders of the Boone and Crockett Club in 1887. This hunting club is in existence today.

Daniel was also quite an inventor. He designed and patented a rifle sight.

Daniel's father, Daniel Moreau Barringer Sr. was in the US Congress prior to the War Between the States and was a close friend and fellow congressman with Abraham Lincoln.

Daniel's father's family was from Concord, Cabarrus County, NC. One of his uncles is Gen. Rufus Clay Barringer of the 1st NC Cavalry Regiment and when captured and held at City Point, Va visited with Pres. Abraham Lincoln who was an old chum and congressional college of his father Daniel Sr.

Another Barringer uncle of Daniel's is Victor Clay Barringer who was the host of Pres. Jefferson Davis in Concord when Davis was on his escape further south at war's end. Victor Barringer was a judge and sat as the US judge on the Court of Appeals of the International Tribunal in Alexandria, Egype. His Uncle Victor is buried in the Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, DC.

Daniel has a 1st cousin, Dr. Paul Brandon Barringer, who as a child beat Pres. Jefferson Davis in a game of chess while David was in Concord, NC. Paul's mother had died and Paul was living with his Uncle Victor while his father Gen. Rufus Barringer was away at war. Paul went on to become a Doctor and is credited for the establishment of the Medical School of the University of Virginia and later, Paul went on to become President of the now named Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, VA.

Daniel's grandfather of Concord, Cabarrus County, NC is Brig. General Paul B. Barringer who served in the War of 1812 and is buried in Concord, NC.
