J. Frank Martin, 101, formerly of 1311 Philippen Street, Manitowoc, died Tuesday, August 8, 1989 at St. Mary’s Home, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 9 am Friday at St. Mary’s Home Chapel. Mr. Martin’s nephew, Rev. Paul Demuth and Rev. Tom Wojciechowski O.F.M., will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Drews Bleser Post Number 88.
Mr. Martin was born December 13, 1887 at Mount Vernon, Ohio, son of the late John P. and Annabelle Curran Martin. He married the former Florence C. Pfeffer on September 29, 1919 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death May 13, 1982. She preceded him in death May 13, 1982. Mr. Martin graduated in 1914 from the College of Pharmacy of Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio. After graduation he first moved to Racine, WI, where he was employed at the Red Cross Pharmacy. A year later he moved to Two Rivers, WI and was employed as a pharmacist at the Joseph Stephanie Drug Store. Mr. Martin then served in the United States Army as a Cpl. for two years during World War I after which he moved to Manitowoc to join his aunt, Sarah Vetting who had raised him after the death of his mother. He entered the employment of the Park Drug Store on Washington Street and eventually entered into a forty year business association with the late Walter Gerbinsky and the two established two additional drug stores on Western Avenue and on New York Avenue here in Manitowoc. From 1952 to 1962, Mr. Martin operated and became the sole owner of the Martin’s Park Drug Store on Western Avenue. Upon his retirement at age 75, Mr. Martin took up oil painting for which he was well known in this area. His paintings have been enjoyed in many homes and institutions throughout the United States as well as some foreign countries. Mr. Martin was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church, The Little Gallery, Palettiers, Isaak Walton Lelague, American Legion Drews Bleser Post No. 88, Manitowoc Maritime Museum and Manitowoc Senior Citizens. He was also a member of the American, Wisconsin and Manitowoc Pharmaceutical Associations and the National Association of Retail Druggists.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, John T. and Donna Martin of Rancho Mirage, California, Robert T. and Patricia Martin of Manitowoc, Wesley G. and Lois (Scotty) Martin of Manitowoc; 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren, 1 step great grandchild, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl W. Martin, two sisters, Anna Louise Gueulette and Helen Gertrude Martin and a daughter-in-law, Carol Martin.
Friends may call at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, 4 pm to 8 pm this Thursday and Friday at St. Mary’s Home Chapel from 8 am to 9 am. Prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm this Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials would be appreciated to either St. Andrew Church or St. Mary’s Nursing Home.
