Kurt W. Mueller, Sr., a well-known dog trainer and longtime all-breed dog show judge, died Sunday, September 12, 1999. He was 90.
Mr. Mueller had resided with his wife, Jeanette, at 7715 Dutch Road, where they had established Mueller’s Retriever Kennels, one of the Midwest’s largest sporting dog kennels of the early 1950’s.
Born in Schmoellen, Germany, on March 15, 1909, Mr. Mueller was a son of Richard and Martha Braunlich Mueller, coming to the United States as a child with his family which settled in Ashland, Ws. The family later moved to Two Rivers.
On May 13, 1933, Mr. Mueller married the former Jeanette Rustboldt of Manitowoc, at St. Boniface Catholic Church.
As a young man, Mr. Mueller became a newspaper advertising salesman, working for various newspapers in Wisconsin, before he took employ with the Manitowoc Herald Times, where he became classified advertising manager.
In 1945, Mr. Mueller left the newspaper to embark on his dog training career.
His early passion to train dogs was sparked when he attended a retriever field trial in Brown Deer where he was impressed with the dog handling demonstrated by a reknowned English trainer.
It followed that Mr. Mueller became a winning field trial handler of the 1940s, built on the solid success of Field Champion Gun of Arden, a Labrador owned by Manitowoc industrialist Guido Rahr.
In 1937, two years after the Manitowoc County Kennel Club was founded, Mr. Mueller became its president, and he was instrumental in obtaining both dog show and field trial licenses for the club. He served as chairman of the club’s first American Kennel Club licensed dog show in 1944, then as chairman of the club’s first AKC licensed retriever trials in 1947-48-49.
During World War II, Mr. Mueller served as a recruiter of the United States Army’s Division of Dogs for Defense.
In 1968, a change of career saw Mr. Mueller become a dog show judge. And over the next 20 years as an AKC all-breed judge, he judged approximately 1,000 dog shows throughout the United States, Canada and in South America.
Survivors, besides his wife, Jeanette, include a son and daughter-in-law, Kurt Jr., and Gail Mueller, Manitowoc; a daughter, Bonnie Mueller, Manitowoc; three granddaughters, Fawn and Jim Gass and Darcy and Ken Staudinger, all of Spokane, Wash., Christy Mueller and her husband, Sten Tjaden, Eureka, Calif., a grandson, Chad Gulseth and special persons, Anna and Brittany Mallien, Kingsbridge; a brother, Erhardt Mueller, Two Rivers; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Tobey Gass, Spokane; a special sister-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Schultz of River’s Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two infant sisters, and a sister Erna Kitzrow and her husband, Leroy, Two Rivers; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Irma Mueller, Two Rivers.
Private funeral arrangements are being handled by the Jens Funeral Home & Crematory, Manitowoc.
A memorial church service will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church building fund.
