WILLIAM E. DUGAN, Jr, of Rochester, New York, enlisted on September 19, 1914. He was attached to the 3m de Marche du 1re Etranger (the third Marching Regiment of' the First Foreign Legion, each regiment of the Legion containing four Marching Regiments). Later he was in the Second Marching Regiment, where there were more Americans, and in the 170th Infantry. While with the 170th he received the Croix de Guerre for bringing in prisoners at Bois Caillette. He rose from private to corporal and sergeant while with the French Army. He was wounded during the attack by the 48th Division of the French Infantry at Bois Caillette, May 1, 1916. Later he joined the Lafayette Escadrille, French Army, and, after America came in, the 103d Aero Squadron of the American Army, becoming first lieutenant. He fought with the French in Champagne, 1915; Verdun, 1916; with the Americans on the Some, 1917; the Aisne, 1917 and 1918; Flanders, 1917 and 1918; Champagne, 1917, and Verdun, 1917. These last were with the Aero Squadron. He was released March 4, 1919, and is now with the United Fruit Company at Port Limon, Costa Rica, Central America.
