James Alexander Fleming was the father of Hosea L. Fleming, the grandfather of Ford Fleming and the great grandfather of JT Fleming. He was born on July 7, 1818 in Twiggs, Georgia. He served in the Indian War of 1836. In 1839 he married Elizabeth Holzemback in Henry, Alabama. The 1840 US Census shows them living in Henry, Alabama. The 1850 US Census shows them living in Beat 4, Clarke, Mississippi. On March 15, 1854 he was granted 40.05 Acres in Jackson County Mississippi by the U.S. General Land Office in Augusta under the Homestead Act. This land is now part of the Preserve Golf Course off Hwy 57. On May 7, 1856 his wife Elizabeth died giving birth to their 6th child, Hosea L. Fleming. In 1858 he married Evaline Woodcock and they were still living in Jackson County during the 1860 US Census. From 1861 to 1865 he served in the Confederate Army Company E, Mississippi 7th Infantry Battalion. The 1870 US Census shows his family moved to Gainesville in Hancock County Mississippi. During the 1880 Census they are show living in Honey Island, St Tammy Parish, Louisiana. In July 1887 his wife died and was buried in Turtleskin Cemetery. On December 25, 1894 at the age of 76, James Alexander Fleming died and was buried in Turtleskin Cemetery. His tombstone reads "He died as he lived Trusting in God."
