Raymond W. Gilbert (U.S. Navy, retired), 87, of Panama City Beach, answered the call of his Lord and Savior to come home April 19, 2015.

Awaiting his arrival were his loving wife, Shirley, his parents, Millard and Carrie Gilbert, his two brothers, Herbert and Clayton, and his great-grandson William Paul Bolen.

He was a loving and faithful husband to his wife, a dedicated and involved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had sailed around the world and could remember each Navy ship with detail. He often remarked that two of his greatest sailing moments were going through the Panama Canal at midnight and surviving a typhoon in the Pacific Ocean. May he have "Fair winds and following seas" on his final journey.

Raymond was proud to have retired from the U.S. Navy and served proudly aboard the following ships: U.S.S. Cacapon, U.S.S. Ajax, U.S.S. Towhee, U.S.S. Shrike, U.S.S. Penquin and the U.S.S. Hunley. He was also retired from the Naval Exchanges Services and the Athena Research Ship where he was the assistant engineer.

Raymond moved to Panama City Beach from Pennsylvania in 1953 and was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Panama City, Fla. He had a strong Christian faith and was faithful in his attendance to the Lord.

Raymond is survived by his children, a daughter and son-in-law, Lani and Robert Mavin of Waterloo, Ontario, a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Sally Tiley of Montverde, Fla., a daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Paul Sigler of Navarre, Fla. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Robert Lineback of Hudson, Fla., Tess Hogan of Denver, Colo., Melissa Bolen of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., Kristine Montgomery of Petal, Miss., Tiffany Heaward of Clarksville, Tenn., Joshua Tiley, serving in the U.S. Navy in Japan, Sarah Nell Dean, Orlando, Fla., and twelve living great-grandchildren with whom he shared his warmth and laughter. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mildred Nicholson of Leighton, Pa., and Elanore Decker of San Antonio, Texas.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 24, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Daniel Koyn officiating.

Interment will follow at Kent-Forest Lawn Cemetery with military honors offered by the Tyndall Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Asked to serve as pallbearers are: Tom Leisemeyer, Scott Heaward, Russ Montgomery, Chris Hogan, Bill Bolen, Raymond Bolen and Justin Bolen.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1001 West 11th Street, Panama City, FL 32401 in memory of Raymond Gilbert.
