Robert Davis Ashworth was born in Floyd County to Russell Davis Ashworth and his wife, the former Elizabeth Amanda Green. He grew up on a 200-acre farm outside Rome, Georgia, with one of his earliest memories being the blizzard and flood that hit the area in 1885/86. He married Miss Emma Belle McKissick in 1897. They were parents of a daughter, Viola (later Mrs. James Hoskins) and a son who died an infant. The young wife died shortly after the little boy. Robert's second wife was Miss Emma Evalina Gentry, whom he married in 1910. Their children were Emma Belle (Mrs. Roy Pollard), Lily Mae (died in infancy), John Henry Ashworth, Mildred (Mrs. W.I. Jones), Nell (Mrs. Roy Bryson), Otis William Ashworth, and Ethel Roberta (Mrs. William Luallen). Robert's death at 49 in 1924 left Emma with six children twelve and under (including Ethel who was born several months after her father's death). He was remembered as a hospitable, temperate man who sang to his children.
