Richard M. Leist Jr., age 78, of 941 N. 23rd St., Manitowoc, died peacefully Friday morning, Sept. 28, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Gerald Foley with entombment at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc. Graveside military rites will be accorded by VFW Otto Oas Post #659.
He was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Manitowoc, son of the late Richard A. and Serena Staudt Leist. Richard was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, class of 1941. He served in the United States Army overseas during World War II in the 8th Air Force, 306 Bomb Group and 367 Bomb Squad. On May 4, 1946, he married the former Shirley Mae Simmerat St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death Dec. 17, 1994. Richard was a malt technician for Anheuser Busch for many years, retiring in 1985. He served as the secretary of the Local Brewery Workers Union 297 for 18 years. He also served as steward of the Teamsters Union for several years and was a member of the local VFW.
Survivors include six daughters and five sons-in-law: Marilyn and Eugene Plachinski, Hortonville; Barbara and Conrad Evenson, Valders; Susan and Donald Mueller, Manitowoc; Debra and Michael Sweeten ; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Candace and William Trochil, Manitowoc; Cynthia Leist, Manitowoc; two sons and daughters-in-law: Terrence and Elizabeth Leist and Scott and Shelly Leist, all of Manitowoc; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Sauermilch, Manitowoc; and a special companion, Rocky. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relative and friends. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Francis Leist; and one sister and two brothers-in-law: Virginia and Roland Dufek and Fred Sauermilch.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc, from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at 11 a.m. There will be no Monday evenng visitation.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
