Joseph J. Michal, of 806 Flambeau St., Manitowoc, died Friday morning, July 13, 2001, at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, at the age of 87, after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Camillus Janas, O.F.M. with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc.
Joe was born on March 11, 1914, in Manitowoc, son of the late Frank and Catherine Svoboda Michal, immigrants to this country from Pilzen, Czechoslovakia. In 1932 he graduated from Lincoln High School where he participated in various sports and was captain of the track team his senior year. Joe also played baseball in the County League for many years. In 1941 Joe married Adelin Reindl of Manitowoc, and in the same year he joined the Manitowoc Police Department. While a police officer, Joe was very active in the Wisconsin Professional Policemen's Association, serving as secretary and later as president of the local chapter, Joe also participated in the police pistol league as well as the State Association and helped organize the Fox Valley Pistol League, a competitive target shooting league among all Fox Valley and state members. Joe retired from the Manitowoc Police Department in 1974 with the rank of Lieutenant and then worked at Associated Bank of Manitowoc until 1984.
His hobbies included being a baseball fan, gardening, dancing, bowling, golfing and listening to Bohemian music. As an avid golfer, Joe played in local leagues, hitting two holes in one and winning a few championships. He was especially proud of his Czech heritage and was twice able to visit his relatives in Pilzen. In addition to being a member of the WPPA, Joe was a member of the Wisconsin Czechs Inc., Manitowoc Eagles Aerie #706, and Meadow Links Golfing Association.
Joe is survived by his wife, Adeline Michal, Manitowoc; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Carol Michal, Olympia, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie Michal-Henne and Manfred Henne, M.D., Silverdale, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Michal, Rick (April) Michal, Michelle Michal, Christine (Mike) Roberts, Erik Henne, Lukas Henne, Nico Henne, all of Washington state; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Michal, Austin Michal and James Johnson, two nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and John Schroeder and Ann and Harold Last.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 17, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m., where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m, led by the Rev. Camillus Janas, O.F.M.
