SPOKANE, Wash. - Memorial services were held Tuesday, June 28, 1994, at 10 a.m. at Fairchild Air Force Base Chapel in Spokane, Wash., for Lt. Col. A.A. "Bud" Holland. Lt. Col Holland, a native of Windsor, was one of four aviators killed when a B-52 bomber crashed on Friday, June 24, 1994, during practice maneuvers in preparation for a base air show on Sunday.
He was the son of the late Leroy and Virginia Holland of Windsor. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Anne Holland; two daughters, Heather Lee and Mary Margaret of Spokane; an uncle, Taylor Holland of Walters; two aunts and uncles, Ann and Jack Gale Jr. of Smithfield and Margaret Allen and Walter Thomas of Newport News.
Lt. Col. Holland graduated from Campbell University, Buies Creek, N.C. He attended officer training school and received his commission in January 1971. Upon completion of pilot training at Columbus AFB, Miss., in February 1972, Holland was assigned to B-52s at Barksdale AFB, La. Other assignments included Southeast Asia during the Vietnam conflict, K.I. Sawyer AFT, Mich., for another tour of duty, Ramstein AB, Germany, and Fairchild AFB, Wash.
Lt. Col. Holland was a command pilot with over 5,000 flying hours. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with three oak leaf clusters, Combat Readiness Medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm.
A monument for the four deceased aviators will be erected at Fairchild AFT, Spokane, Wash.
