Ruby Isabelle Hanft, 96, of Blackfoot, passed away Friday, April 24, 2015 in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

She was born January 14, 1919, in Goshen, Idaho the daughter of George David Hansen and Isabelle Henrietta Teeples. She graduated from Firth High School in 1937. She attended Idaho State University where she studied teaching courses and became a school teacher. Her first teaching job was at the Wilson Grade School where she taught 3rd and 4th grade. She taught elementary grades 4-6 at Stoddard Elementary for over 15 years. Ruby taught school at the Taysom School which was located 1.5 south of the Woodville townsite from 1942-1943.

She married Oscar Wilbur Hanft on January 3, 1942. Oscar left 6 weeks later to fight in World War II. While Oscar was in the army, Ruby worked at a defense plant as a welder, making radio tubes, and as a secretary in the office.

Ruby had many hobbies and interests. She loved rock collecting, 4-H, camping in her little pink trailer, hunting, fishing at Stanley Lake, reading, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, soaking at Lava Hot Springs, and operating a Ham Radio with her husband. She loved seeing and hearing the blue birds and killdeer at meadow creek. She had a true love and appreciation for doing genealogy and is always collecting information from relatives, headstones, cemeteries and people as far away as Germany. She worked at the Bingham County Historical Society as secretary and later as treasurer.

She is survived by her children; Deon (Donna) Eugene Hanft, of Kenmore, WA, Richard (Loretta) Alan Hanft, of Lacey, WA, Henry (Ravenna) Calvin Hanft, of Sandy, UT, Jill (Dennis) Arlene Loftus, of Idaho Falls, ID and David Lee Hanft, of Firth, ID, sister Verna Mary Johnson, of Shelley, ID, 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

She is preceeded in death by her husband, Oscar Wilbur Hanft, her parents, George and Isabelle Hansen, her infant daughter Carolyn Hanft (died shortly after birth), brothers, Lorin George Hansen, Gerald Archie Hansen, and Carl David Hansen.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, ID. A viewing will be held the night prior Wednesday, April 29, from 6:00-7:30 pm and again for one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment will follow the services in the Goshen Cemetery.
