She was born in Topeka, Kansas on July 4, 1921 the daughter of John G. and Margaret (Jacobs) Hafner.
Helen owned and operated a Hair Salon.
She was an avid bowler and loved fishing and camping. Helen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Helen married Albert Dechand Sr. in Topeka on October 14, 1941. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1987. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Delores and a son, Dan.
She is survived by her children, Don Dechand of Topeka, Ed (Sharon) Dechand of Topeka, Mary Jo (Bob) Donahy of Mansfield, TX, Albert “Bert” (Cheryl) Dechand Jr. of Topeka, and Dianne Dechand of Denver, Co., a brother, Ray (Pearl) Hafner of Topeka, 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Helen will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Sunday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 4th, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
