Ilion, Jan. 9. - Michael D. Hartford, Ilion's oldest native resident, died at his home at 11 North Fifth Ave, at 8:20 o'clock last night. He had been critically ill for the past 10 days. In his death Ilion mourns the loss of a brave soldier, an honorable, sterling and most highly regarded citizen, a man who loved his home town and family and who always took a keen interest in anything that was worthy and for the good of all. Although he had reached but a year of the four score mark, he was always active and attended to his daily duties each day until he was stricken with the fatal illness. He was a great lover of the outdoors and often walked for miles in all sorts of weather. He was an interesting conversationalist and always enjoyed a good visit with his friends, and especially delighted to talk of the trials and scenes of the Civil War. His war record was supreme and highly honorable. He enlisted in Company B, 126th Regiment, New York Volunteers, in August 1862, and served three years without missing a role call, taking part in all of the prominent battles with the Army of the Potomac. (note: records stated he enlisted July 21, 1862 in Co. B 121st Infantry). He was a possessor of a Gettysburg medal, having fought three days in that, the greatest battle of the Civil War. He has visited Gettysburg and other Southern battlefields two or three times in the late years as a guest of the State of New York, and there enjoyed the the reminiscencees of those days with his former comrades...(note: from History of Herkimer County, NY - F.W. Beers, 1879, he also fought in battles of Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Rappahannock Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the front of Petersburg)
In politics he was an ardent Republican and always was deeply interested in political affairs. He cast his first vote for Lincoln by proxy, L.L. Merry voting for him.
The deceased was born on West Main Street, opposite what was then called London Bridge, which at the date of his birth, April 9, 1841, was some little settlement and boasted of a tavern and a few houses. He had always lived in Ilion and was interested in its development and growth. He was also oldest in point of service of the employees of the Remington Arms Company at it is said of him that he was never late for work. At the time of his illness he was employed in department 20 of the plant. He was employed at the plant for 50 years.
On May 24, 1875 he married Anne Donlin of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. who died six years ago.
