Born at Millerowo, Russia on 15 July 1910, he emigrated to Canada with his family in 1925. In 1945 he founded Palliser Furniture, which became one of the largest furniture manufactuers in Canada, with plants in Alberta, Manitoba, and North Carolina. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Mennonite Brethren Bible College (later Concord College), the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, and Camp Arnes, and he helped to establish the Mennonite Economic Development Association.
