In 1870, Amos married Susan Harpster from Flatrock, Ohio, daughter of Frederick Harpster (b. in PA) and Sarah Hollingshead (b. in NY). Susan and Amos' four children were: Mary Ann (b. 1871), Corry F. (b. 1876), Edward John (b. 1879) and Mabel (b. 1884).
During the Civil War, Amos served in the Union Army with Company H, 107th Ohio Infantry, having enlisted Sept. 18, 1862.
