Donald S Bickers was the only child of John Laurence Bickers and Blanche Clack Bickers who were lifelong school teachers. He was the grandson of Arminda Fowler and Alfred Rainey Clack. Donald went to school in NC, TN and GA and entered Emory University at age 16. He received his bachelors and medical degree at Emory. He served his internship at Emory University Hospital. He served as a medical officer in the US Army for two years with the rank of captain. The next five years were spent in pursuing postgraduate education at the Harvard Neurological Service in Boston City Hospital for neurological residency at Montefiore Hospital in New York, a year as research associate at the Illinois Neuropsychiatric Institute, and a fellowship at the Montreal Institute and then his neurosurgical residency at Emory University Hospital.

He entered private practice in Atlanta in 1952 and with a particular interest in seizure disorders he established EEG labs at Emory, St. Joseph's and West Paces Ferry Hospitals.

He received numerous accolades and awards, too many to mention here. He was very interested in preserving his southern heritage and belonged to many groups devoted to that purpose.

After many years of helping people and doing volunteer work and consulting for many causes, he retired from private practice but continued to serve a consultant.

After total retirement, he lived on his family farm in Gwinnett County where he was interested in conservation and raised registered cattle.

Dr Bickers touched many lives, including mine, as he was my little brother's neuroogist for many years and helped him through many crises. He will be missed by all who knew him and all of the people whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, a daughter, two sons, and four grandchildren.

Addendum: Through some family research, I recently discovered that Dr. Bickers was my husband's second cousin, through the Fowler/Clack line.
