Throughout nearly seventeen months of dealing with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, Neil Lieurance, ever the teacher, showed us how to live with grace, nobility and good humor while at the same time facing imminent death. During his last two months he was surrounded constantly by loving friends and family until death came on March 9 with a friend holding his hand and singing to him. Everyone who cared for him, sat with him, worked with him on his life's final projects called it a privilege and an honor to be allowed to give back a portion of what they had received from him through many years of friendship.

Born in Longview, WA to Victor C. and Eula A. (Rice) Lieurance, and raised on a large farm east of Castle Rock, Niel graduated from Castle Rock High School, attended Lower Columbia Community College, and received Bachelor's and Masters degrees in Music Education from Western Washington University. He lived in Shoreline and taught at Shorcrest High School from 1966 until his retiremanet in 1993. Choirs under Neil's direction performed at national conventions and received many awards, including the Best in the Northwest Festival held in Portland, OR.

Neil was named the 1991 "Teacher of the Year" of the Shoreline School District and the 1988 WMEA "Outstanding Music Educator."
