Martin was born on August 21, 1907 in the Town of Lyndon to the late Martin J. and Louise Bast Burkhardt. He married Georgina Schneider in Monrow on August 10, 1933.
Martin was educated in the Harmon rural school, Plymouth High School, the University of Wisconsin and Stout State University. He was an instructor in vocational agriculture education at Milton Union High School from 1930 to 1943 when he moved to Merrill to start the vocational agricultural education program in the high shcool. In 1946 he was appointed director of the Merrill School of Vocational and Adult Education, a capacity in which he served until the school was merged into the larger North Central Technical School district, at which time he served as program coordinator.
Martin was a member of several professional educational orginizations including the American Vocational Association and the Wisconsin Vocational Directors Association, Alpha Zeta honorary Agricultural fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi all campus honorary Agricultural fraternity, a life member of the Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association, the American Association of Retired Persons and a life member of the Wisconsin Agricultural and Lice Science Alumni Association.
He was a member of the Merrill Rotary Club, serving as its president and its treasurer for many years. Martin received the Paul Harris Fellow Award for service to Rotary. He was also a member of the Lincoln County Farm Bureau and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation.
While in Merrill, Martin was chairman of the Lincoln County Chapter of the American Red Cross for nine years, served as co-chairman of the 1947 Centennial committee, was active in the Boy Scouts of America program on the local district, and council level, and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and several appreciation awards for service to scouting.
He was instrumental in starting the Merrill unit of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Clubs and served as a member of the board as well as its president. He started the Tax Aide for the Elderly in Merrill under sponsership of the local retired teachers assocition.
Martin was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of its constituent bodies including Virginia Falls Lodge Number 226, Wausau Chapter 51, Royal Arch Masons, life member of the Eau Claire Consistory, the Zor Shrine Temple of Madison and the Timeber Shrine Club of northern Wisconsin.
A member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Martin was a member of the choir for nearly forty years, a member of the church council serving as vice president and on its building committee. His hobbies included woodworking, furniture refinishing, chair caning and was an avid gardner who enjoyed seeing things grow. Martin loved flowers, both wild and domestic. He also enjoyed music, traveling, photography, reading and visiting with friends.
Martin is survived by his wife Georgina, Merrill, a daughter Janette L. Jenson of Edgerton, a son Martin (Kathy) Burkhardt of Wausau; three grandchildren; and sister Lina (Otto) Allman, Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, March 5, 1995 in Merrill. The Rev. Dale Kuck officiated and burial took place at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Plymouth.
