LAKEWOOD CADET DIES IN NEW MEXICO AIR CRASH

Cadet Allan W. Hottois, 22, of 1278 Granger
Avenue, Lakewood, and another Ohio member
of the United States Army Air Forces were
among six airmen killed yesterday when two
twin-engine training bombers collided in
a practice bombing mission near Roswell,
New Mexico, according to an Associated
Press dispatch.

The air tragedy occurred while three planes
were flying in formation at an altitude of
4,000 feet on routine bombing practice.

Killed in the plane on which Cadet Hottois
was bombardier, were Hottois; First Lieut.
David P. Griffiths, 24, of Pittsburgh, the
pilot; and Second Lieut. William P. Newby,
22, of San Jose, California, the co-pilot.

The other three who were killed were aboard
the second plane, which burned after crashing.
They were Second Lieut. Oscar W. Tredmore,
27, of Franklin, Ohio, the pilot; Aviation
Cadet Gerald F McKenna, 30, of Pittsburgh;
and Pvt. Vernon T. McKelvey, 20, of Fort
Cobb, Oklahoma, a photographer.

Col. A.C. Kincaid, Commanding Officer at
the Roswell Flying School, said the cause
of the crash had not been determined.

Members of the Hottois' Family said last
night that he enlisted in the Air Forces
last January 27, while a junior at Ohio
State University, and that he looked
forward to receiving a bombardier's wings
and a commission as a Second Lieutenant
in two weeks.

MARRIAGE WAS SET

Hottois had planned to be married September
21, to Miss Helyn Lawson, 2131 W. 103rd
Street, according to his family. The
marriage was to have taken place at Roswell,
where Hottois had been stationed since July
1, after receiving his preliminary flight
training at Santa Ana, California.

Hottois was a member of the Pershing Rifles
of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps, at
Ohio State. He was a graduate of Lakewood
High School. The cadet had been interested
in aviation for many years, and his chief
hobby had long been building model planes,
his family said.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
W,N, Hottois, and a sister, Mrs. Jeanne
Grulke, 2217 Chesterland Avenue, Lakewood.

Funeral arrangements await word from air
force officials today, regarding the
arrival of the body in Lakewood.

AIRPLANE COLLISION KILLS SIX FLIERS

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP)--Six fliers were killed
Tuesday when two Army training planes from
the Roswell Air Base collided in the air
about 10 miles northwest of Roswell.

The Army Base Commander said all occupants
were killed instantly when the ships
crashed to earth.

They were part of a three plane formation
of AT-11 two-engine training bombers which
were on a practice bombing mission.

The dead, as announced by the Army:

Lt. David P. Griffiths, 24, Pittsburgh, PA.
Lt. William P. Newby, 22, San Jose, CA.
Lt. Oscar W. Tredmore, 27, Franklin, OH.

as military escort. Cadet Dias was to have
been best man at Cadet Hottois' marriage,
planned for September 21, to Miss Helyn
Lawson, 2131 W. 103rd Street.

AIR FORCES HONOR CADET, PLANE VICTIM

The United States Army Air Forces last
night awarded posthumously a Second
Lieutenant's commission to Cadet Allan
W. Hottois, 22, killed Tuesday when two
twin-engine training bombers collided
in a practice bombing mission near
Roswell, New Mexico.

Members of Hottois' family said he had
looked forward to receiving his bombardier's
wings and commission. He also had planned
to be married September 21, to Miss Helyn
Lawson, 2131 W. 103rd Street, the family
said.

Cadet Herman J. Dias, a close Hawaiian
friend of Hottois, who had been training
with him, served as military escort for
the body and made the presentation of the
wings and commission to the parents, Mr.
and Mrs. W.N. Hottois, 1278 Granger
Avenue, Lakewood.

Funeral services are to be held today
at 3 p.m. at the William R. & Roy A.
Daniels Funeral Home, 15800 Detroit
Avenue, Lakewood.
