Isaac is the son of John & Elizabeth Baker, sailed up from Tombigbee River in AL in 1787 and settled on a Spanish grant a few miles above the St. Stephens. Isaac was the youngest son. He married Aurelia Womack on Sept 23, 1827. He moved from Washington County, Alabama to Texas in 1843. Isaac Baker and his wife, Aurelia Womack, built "The Cedars" three miles NE of what is now Plantersville, in Grimes County, TX. The name was derived from the cedar trees planted by the Baker slaves on the front lawn in a horseshoe shape.
He provided for the dead as well as the living by establishing 2 cemeteries - one for his family and one for his slaves and servants. By 1853, the local planters recognized the need for a town, so Judge Henry Griggs, Col Isaac Baker and Dr. Mitchell each donated 10 acres of land for the founding of Plantersville.
After Isaac Bakers death the home was sold to one of his sons, Jack Baker and his wife, Cordella Forrester Baker. Succeeding generations of Bakers lived in The Cedars until 1918, when the plantation was sold to the Kempner family of Galveston. The Kempners renamed it Deer Hills. In 1956 the Kempner's sold the house to M.E. Shiflett family of Houston. In 1962 the Shifletts sold to Mr. Dean W. Osmun of Houston who called it Cedar Hill Ranch and later restored the original name of The Cedars. In 1982 it consisted of 2,870 acres.
