Last rites were held Saturday, January 8, at 2 pm from St. Stephen's Episcopal church for Mrs Virginia Appleby, who died January 4 at the local hospital following a four months illness. The Rev Ethan Allen officiated at the services. Burial was in the family lot in Shell Lake cemetery. Acting as pall beareres were: Walter Hoar, Floyd Bannister, P E Clanton, R D Stouffer, P J Donavan, Howard Dearson.

Mrs Appleby, who was 73 years of age, was born in Grant Co, WI. She was married to Adelbert M Appleby November 28, 1899. The family came to Shell Lake in 1918 where Mr Appleby was engaged in the real estate business. They lived here for a number of years and also in Florida.
Mrs Appleby was a former member of the Eastern Star and also of St Stephan's church and guild.
Surviving are two daughters; Mrs Kenneth Hoar (Valetta) of Shell Lake and Mrs Hazel Schneider of Los Angeles; two sons, Lloyd of Edgerton, WI, and Donald of Atlanta, GA, eleven grandchildren, one brother David Johnson of Sioux City, IA; one sister, Mrs Ethel Fox, of Wichita, KS. Mr Appleby died several years ago and is buried here.
