Ruth Alene Corn, 88, of Independence, Kansas passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas.

Ruth was born August 13, 1917 in Drum Creek Township near Cherryvale, Kansas to Reverend Orville Ray and Bessie Florence (Webber) Carpenter. She attended schools in Independence.

She married Nelvin D. "LeRoy" Corn on November 02, 1935 at Independence, Kansas. Mr. Corn preceded her in death on January 30, 2004.

They made their home in Cherryvale and moved to Independence in 1962.

Mrs. Corn, along with her husband, LeRoy, owned and operated the C & C Bakery in Independence for 14 years until 1971. Before that, the couple operated several other bakeries in Cherryvale and the surrounding area. Mrs. Corn also worked for the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons; Electra Mfg. in Independence, and she retired from Automotive Controls Corp. in Independence.

Mrs. Corn attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Independence.

Mrs. Corn is survived by five sons, Charles Corn and his wife, Irene of Stonington, Connecticut, Larry Corn and his wife, Gay of Brentwood, Tennessee, David Corn, and his wife, Mary, Terry Corn and his wife, Sharon, and Danny Corn all of Independence, Kansas; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Linda) Wilkerson of Marco Island, Florida and Mrs. George (Elaine) Glines of Independence, Kansas; five brothers, Leon Carpenter of Grove, Oklahoma, Gerald Carpenter of Neodesha, Kansas, Alva Ray Carpenter of Wichita, Kansas, James Carpenter of Independence, Kansas, and Donald Carpenter of Florida; one sister, Lila Carroll of Independence, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Gary and a brother, Elmer.

Visitation hours for Ruth will be on Thursday, May 18, 2006 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday, May 19, 2006 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel Webb Rodrick Chapel.

Funeral services for Ruth Alene Corn will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the Penwell-Gabel Webb Rodrick Chapel with Reverend Leon Hendrix of the Church of the Nazarene officiating.

Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery, Cherryvale, Kansas.
