Melvin E. DeBo, 83, of Independence, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at the Eagle Estates.

Melvin was born on August 17, 1922 in Elk City, Kansas to Earl and Mabel I. (Whitson) DeBo. Melvin was raised and educated in Elk City.

He entered the U. S. Marine Corps on October 05, 1942 serving in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign earning the WWII Victory Medal and was honorably discharged on September 29, 1945.

On June 05, 1960, Melvin married Donna Jean Wilson in Cherryvale, Kansas and she survives.

Melvin began working with the City of Independence, Water Department, then worked for Sinclair Pipe Line where he worked for eight years. He later worked for the Henderson Engineering Company in Alice, Texas and returned to Independence, Kansas where he and Donna operated DeBo's Retail Liquor Store for 29 years. They retired in March of 1989. Melvin also worked at the V.F.W. Dewlin-Dix Post 1186 from 1993 to 2005.

He was a life member of the V.F.W. Dewlin-Dix Post 1186 in Independence, Kansas, Life member of the Marine Corps League #612, Independence, Kansas and the American Bowling Congress.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Donna Jean of Independence, Kansas; one daughter, Donna Kay "Katy" Hines of Comfort, Texas; and three grandsons, Jamie Hines of Boerne, Texas, Chad Hines of George West, Texas, and Trey Hines of Boerne, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Cremation will take place under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Webb Rodrick Funeral Home and Crematory.

Memorial services for Melvin E. DeBo will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2006 at graveside, Oak Hill Cemetery, Elk City, Kansas with Military Honors presented by the V.F.W. Dewlin-Dix Post 1186, Independence, Kansas.
