Samuel Richard Shetrom, 88, of Huntingdon, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 17, 2012 at his residence. Born on July 17, 1924 in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Jesse E. and Mabel (Miller) Shetrom. On March 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Winifred Mark at the St. James Lutheran Church, Huntingdon, by the Rev. Manges. Mrs. Shetrom survives in Huntingdon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Richard David “Rick” Shetrom, and his wife, Amy of Osceola Mills, and two grandsons, Ian and Jesse Shetrom of Osceola Mills. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by five sisters, Maggie Shetrom, Minnie Rudy, Madeline Bunn, Dorothy Whitsel, and Betty Shetrom, and three brothers, John, Jesse, and Charles Shetrom.
Mr. Shetrom was a member of First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon.
He was a member and past Worshipful Master of Mount Moriah Lodge #300, F&AM, Huntingdon, and a member of the Jaffa Shrine. He was a life member of Standing Stone Post #1754, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Huntingdon, and a member of the Frank P. Hommon Post #24, American Legion, Huntingdon. He was also a former fire chief of the Huntingdon Fire Department.
He attended the Alfarata School in Huntingdon, and graduated from Huntingdon High School with the class of 1942.
He served with the U.S. Army in the 79th Infantry Division during WW II, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He also served during the Korean War and attained the rank of Master Sergeant.
Mr. Shetrom was employed by his father and was later a co-owner of Shetrom Hardware, Huntingdon. Until his retirement in 1988, he was employed by Marks Brothers, Huntingdon, as a bookkeeper, and was a school bus driver.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
At the request of Mr. Shetrom there will be no public viewing, visitation or services.
Private committal and interment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in remembrance of Samuel R. Shetrom may be made to the First United Methodist Church, World Hunger Program, 425 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, PA 16652.
