Auntie you were a very hard working person. You ran a boarding house for many years. Some of your customers were less than princes for sure. You put up with all that and always managed a smile, at least for Kenny and I. I will always remember you, my beer drinking aunt. In your life you had your day and always went to your favorite bar and "hoisted a few". People are different now, they dont have your smile and mostly none work as hard, many people will say that. You had many friends auntie. Rest now and God speed. If truly the first come last and the last first you will be a queen in the next life. Godspeed!

I will always remember the boarding house on Market street, just above down town. On one of Burlingtons seven hills the view of downtown was a wonderful slice of life. Even on a hot summer day the scene had a "village smithy" look about it. Elms were chestnuts of course. Now all the huge elm trees are gone, the train yard is gone, the bridge is modern and of course the world has swiftly turned. We all have our moment. Mostly, we appreciate all of it to late, except in memory. Godspeed Auntie.

It isn't a life but it is a thought. In that thought there is life!

June 8, 2012: I was back in Burlington, Iowa a month ago traveling around with my mom enjoying what memorys we could find. No one will mow a terraced lawn any more and many of Burlington's beautiful terraces are gone, dug up and replaced with ugly flat cement walls. Ethyls boarding house on Market and 6th is gone, replaced by an newer apartment house. Gone too are the front steps and porch and the remarkable view of downtown Burlington. Nothing lasts, have no expectations.
