Esther Hutchins Wall, a resident of Friends Homes West for the past 13 years, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, after several years of declining health. She was the wife of Dr. Ronald E. Wall, who died in 1992. Mrs. Wall was born in Davidson County on Sept. 23, 1910, the eldest daughter of Isaac Summy and Myrtle Dickens Hutchins. She grew up in Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School in 1926. She attended Flora McDonald College, where she was active in student government, athletics and in many religious activities. After her college graduation, she taught in the Lexington City schools until she married Dr. Ronald Edwin Wall in 1935. Dr. Wall was then pastor of the First Baptist Church in Sanford where the couple lived until 1943. They then were called by Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church in Elizabeth City where they both were active in religious, educational and community activities. In 1949, they moved to Greensboro to lead College Park Baptist Church for the next six years. They next were called to North Winston Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, where they remained for five years until they were asked to return to College Park Baptist Church in Greensboro, which has been their home since that time. After returning to Greensboro, Mrs. Wall resumed her teaching career and taught sixth grade at Craven Elementary School until her retirement in 1976. She was named a teacher emeritus by Delta Kappa Gamma and continued to be active in DKG, as well as other educational and religious organizations. She and Dr. Wall became active members of Parkway Baptist Church after his retirement and Mrs. Wall taught adult Sunday school classes at Parkway for many years. She was recognized as an outstanding teacher and church leader. Mrs. Wall was preceded in death by her three brothers, Chalmers Hutchins of Charlotte, Paul Hutchins of Morganton and Dewey Hutchins of Lexington. She is survived by her sister, her three children, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to a church or an educational organization of the donor' s choice.
