Retherford Ernest "Zip" Zipperer entered into eternal rest June 11.

Born on a farm in Egypt, he was the son of Ellis Leander and Anna Blanton Zipperer.

Zip attended school at Shawnee and a school in Egypt. He moved to Savannah, GA in December 1925 and attended several junior high schools and graduated from Savannah High School in June 1930. He then attended Richards Business College in Savannah.

He was first employed by the Savannah Hotel as assistant secretary and assistant accountant. After a little over a year he was employed in the office of Shuey & Company, a chemical laboratory. He was employed in the office; however, because of the lack of office work he was placed in the laboratory most of the time. Zip worked for Shuey & Company a little over seven years, after which he was employed in the Bookkeeping Division of the Supply Department of the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He worked in various areas of the Supply Department until 1964 and was then transferred to the Naval Supply Center as supervisor of about 140 employees in five divisions.

In 1966, Mr Zipperer transferred to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and worked with agencies in the Sixth Naval District in financial assistance. He retired on January 10, 1969, and for many years he worked on a part time basis in the accounting work for many small business. In 1971 he was employed as the first employee of the City of North Charleston. He worked as treasurer on a part time basis for two years. Mr. Zipperer then ran for City Council and was elected. He served on City Council until 1991(served as Mayor Pro Tem for nine years).

When in Egypt he was baptized in the Turkey Branch Baptist Church. After moving to Savannah in 1925 he joined the First Baptist Church and remained a member until he moved to Charleston in 1930. While living in downtown Charleston he joined the Citadel Square Baptist Church. After moving to North Charleston he joined the Charleston Heights Baptist Church. In 1955 he transferred to Cooper River Baptist and as a charter member he served in many offices and committees. In addition he had served on many committees at the other churches. Zip worked for many years as a Sunday School Teacher, worked with the Baptist Young Peoples Union. He was elected as a deacon and served many years as Chairman of the Board.

In January 1934 Zip met Juanita (Nita) Sturgeon in Savannah, GA and they were married in her home in Denmark, SC on April 20, 1935. They lived in Savannah until November 1939 when they moved to Charleston.

Zip has over the years been active in various organizations. He joined the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Savannah and rejoined in North Charleston in 1943. During the years he served as president of the local chapter. He later served as National Director and then as State President of the South Carolina Junior Chamber of Commerce. He served on many committees and attended seven National conventions. He joined the Travelers Protective Association in 1951. He organized a new Post in North Charleston and served as president. He later served as Vice President of the State organization. In 1955, Mr. Zipperer joined the Rotary Club of North Charleston. He later served as local president and became District Governor. He has served on many local committees and several District officers and committees. He served several times as District Representative on the Council on Legislation. Zip joined the Charleston Chapter of the Nation Association of Retired Persons. He has served as Chapter and State President and on many committees. He has attended many of the National Conventions as a representative of the District. He was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Charleston County, and North Charleston Senior Citizens. He was a member of the Georgia Salzburger Club (the group of Georgia Representing the family coming to the United States). He was president of the Cooper River District Memorial Library. The library was built by the North Charleston Jaycees and is still in operation. He was a member of the South Carolina Golf Association, the South Carolina Senior Golf Association and a member of Yeamans Hall Golf Club. He has played many games of softball and volleyball, having won championships in the past years. He was a member of the Cameron Terrace/Oak Park Civic Club. In past years he has served on many committees throughout the County and City.

Zip has traveled over the years to places such as England, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Hawaii, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico, and Monte Carlo.

He was the widower of Juanita Sturgeon Zipperer and surviving are two sons: Lt. Col. Frank E. Zipperer, US Army (Ret) of Arlington, VA and David B. Zipperer of NYC; two sisters: Olevia Z. Ross and Nellie Z. Jones and husband, William, all of Savannah, GA; two grandchildren: Vicki Z. Scott and Frank E. Zipperer, Jr.; three great grandchildren: Cory A. Scott, Kelly M. Scott and Frank E. Zipperer, III.
