IRONWOOD, Mich. — Robert B. "Bob" Arnold, 66, of 716 E. Ayer St., Ironwood, died Wednesday afternoon, March 16, 2005, in his home. He was born Feb. 18, 1939, in Detroit, son of the late Charles and Frances (Augustine) Arnold, and graduated from a Catholic high school there in 1957.

He was employed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a deep sea diver, then served two tours of duty in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, the second tour as an officer and explosives expert in the Navy Seals. He also received a B.S. degree in college, and spent two years working on his master's degree.

Following his honorable discharge, he worked as an engineer worldwide with Sun Oil Co., and as a construction engineer with Amtrak for 20 years in Philadelphia, retiring in 2000. He moved to Ironwood in October of 2004 to be near his family in Ashland.

Bob was a member of St. Cyril Catholic Church in Landsdowne, Pa. and attended Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Landsdowne. He was a wonderful dancer, enjoyed going to the shore, and loved to swim.

He was married to the former Dorothy N. "Dottie" Nicholas on April 18, 1998, on the Cape May Ferry in Delaware. She survives.

Also surviving are a daughter from his first marriage, Natalie (William) Blaise, Pittsburgh, Pa.; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Nicholas, of Philadelphia; four step-children, David (Nicole), William, Amiee, and Kimberly Lawler, all of Philadelphia; two step-grandchildren, Damian Lawler and Danielle Taylor, both of Philadelphia; and numerous cousins.

Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his special uncle, Stanley Augustine, in August 2004.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Daryl Pepin, celebrant.

Rite of Committal will follow in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, where a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by members of the Ironwood American Legion Post S Honor Guard.

Spring burial will be in the St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Moquah.

Visitation will be in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church one hour prior to the Funeral Mass on Monday.
