John Nelson Lance was the son of Joseph Valentine Lance and Sarah Spencer, born and raised in Lumpkin County, Georgia. He married on February 3, 1878 to Martha C. Head, daughter of James and Sarah Elizabeth (Dodd) Head. Nelson and Martha left Lumpkin County in 1894 and moved to DeKalb County, Alabama. Nelson owned several acres of land around the Fyffe area and in 1920 built the Lance Chapel, the family met there every year on his birthday for reunions, which continued after his death. He owned a cannery and syrup mill where neighbors came and canned their fruits and vegetables. Martha died in 1916, and on June 3, 1928 he married Sarah "Sallie" Emma (Ford) Doss; she died in 1939, and Nelson died in 1941, both Nelson and Marthat are buried at Corinth Cemetery; Sallie is buried at Piney Grove Cemetery with her first husband Ruben Chapman Doss.
