I know that Marie was a governess for a wealthy family in London, England around 1900. She remarked to my mom, Esther that coming to Washington County Iowa with dirt roads and farm chores and severe winters was a real test after life in London. Oh well here they are. Marie ran a restaurant in Brighton,Iowa for a few years with Cora Pringle through the 1930s. I remember the Pringle house, it is gone now. I'm told the food was excellent, of course two Iowa farm women used to cooking with all fresh goods. I don't know the name of the restaurant or if it had a name.
Grandma Bleess was an excellent cook and had a wealth of Alsatian recipes. I remember her homemade catsup, wouldn't I love to have some now. Naturally as a kid i wouldnt consider going near the stuff. And her plum pudding, an English recipe, make in January place in the dark highest cupboard and let it mold all year. In December cut off the mold, burn with brandy and eat. No I wouldnt eat that either.
There was always a quilting frame set up some where in the house with a quilt in progress. The local ladies still had quiting partys. One lady was terrrible. After each party Grandma would snip out all her sewing and replace it. Grandma said " no one is going to catch their toes in my stiching'. She would have a boarder. Usually just a room, not meals. Nothing was wasted. She needed a cellar. Maurice hand dug a cellar uinder the house. The notion what is a days work was different then.
May 1 2022, The name of the restaurant was "Pringle Tea Room". I saw an ad in the Brighton paper.
