Neal Anderson Bedinger, Jr., age 91, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Brighton Gardens. He was born, one of six children, to the late Mr. Neal Anderson Bedinger, Sr. and Mrs. Alma Allen Porterfield Bedinger on December 4, 1923 in Worsham, Prince Edward County, VA. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Alice, eldest son, Neal Anderson Bedinger III, and ; his brothers, George Michael Bedinger, Robert H. Bedinger; his sisters, Mary Ann Wilbur and Alma O'Neil. Neal married Alice Virginia Webb in Richmond, VA on June 4, 1949. They resided in Durham, NC until moving to Winston Salem, NC in 1960, where they raised four children. He enlisted in U.S. Navy's V-12 officer college training program, and graduated from Duke University with a major in physics and math. Neal proudly served in the Navy during WWII in the South Pacific and then served in the U.S. Naval Reserves until 1965, retiring as a Lieutenant. He was employed by Davis Inc. for 32 years and retired as General Manager and Executive Vice President. Neal was elected as a Forsyth County Commissioner, and served as Vice Chairman and then Acting Chairman, and was also on the Smith-Reynolds Airport Commission, and on the boards of the Winston Salem State University Foundation and Piedmont Federal Saving Bank. He served as the President of the Winston-Salem Retail Merchant Association, and the Better Business Bureau, and he was a long time member of the Lions Club, and volunteer for the Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind. For many years he and his wife enjoyed many friends, their Wake Forest Football group, and the Bon Vivant Social Club. Neal was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church where he was a deacon for many years. He is survived by one brother, John "Hank" Bedinger of Nashua, NH; three children, William Bruce Bedinger of the home, David Webb Bedinger of Charlotte, NC, and Mary Elizabeth Dixon (Greg) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Drew Dixon, Ben Bedinger, Kristin Bedinger, and a great grandson, Jackson Bedinger. Funeral services are being handled by Frank Vogler and Sons. A funeral service will be held at Knollwood Baptist Church, in Winston-Salem, on Tuesday, May 12, at 2:00 pm. The family will visit friends at 1:30 pm in the church's narthex. A graveside service will then follow at Forsyth Memorial Park, Winston-Salem.
