Richard A. Powers, 79, of Fairhaven passed away Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Alden Court Nursing Care and Rehab Center, in Fairhaven. He was the husband of 59 years, of Rose Marie (Frates) Powers.
Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late George W. and Hazel (Dean) Powers, he settled in Fairhaven 60 years ago and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
Richard had worked at the Acushnet Golf Division many years ago. He then became a bus driver and worked for Almeida Bus Company, American Eagle and then S.R.T.A. until his retirement. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Golden Ager’s and enjoyed country music and NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife; five sons, Richard A. Powers, Jr. and his wife Janice of Fairhaven, Dale M. Powers and his companion Theresa Furtado, Kenneth S. Powers and Jeffrey W. Powers and his companion Lillian DeMello all of New Bedford, and Paul Powers of Fairhaven; a daughter, Lisa M. Leavitt of New Bedford; Mr. Powers was the father of the late Michael Powers and father in law of Susan Powers of Fairhaven; He is also survived by three brothers, George Powers and his wife Barbara, Paul Powers and his wife Jo-Ann all of New Bedford and James Powers of VA; two sister, Patricia Tetreault and her husband Louis and Evelyn Koltz both of Acushnet; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was also the brother of the late Robert Powers, Doris Brainard, and Marilyn DosSantos.

Calling hours are Monday, from 5-8pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven. His funeral will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015, from the funeral home at 8:00am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in Acushnet Cemetery.
